Mammal Diversity Occurrence Data in Lake Ol Bolossat Ecosystems, Nyandarua County - Version 1.0

Mammals are central to ecosystem functioning and often respond quickly to environmental change, making them important indicators of human land use and climate impacts (Ernst & Brown, 2001: Cameron & Scheel, 2001). Disturbance, whether natural or human-driven, alters normal ecological processes (Van Andel et al., 1987). Human activities such as off-road driving, refuse dumping, vegetation trampling, frequent fires, and trail proliferation significantly influence mammal habitats. These pressures are particularly pronounced in ecologically sensitive landscapes like lake Ol’Bolossat, Kenya’s only natural lake in the Central Highlands, where increasing agricultural expansion, livestock grazing, and human encroachment are intensifying their effects on wildlife.Ecosystem goods and services such as fresh water, fertile soils, pollination, nutrient cycling (Peterson et al, 1998), and faunal community regulations (Kingdon et al., 2013) arise from healthy ecological functions. Lake Ol’Bolossat supports rich biodiversity, including grazing mammals, wetland-dependent species, and small mammals that contribute to seed dispersal and soil processes. Understanding mammal behaviour and population dynamics in such areas is therefore critical for conservation.Since some mammals at Lake Ol’Bolossat are elusive and nocturnal, indirect method were used such as track surveys, scat analysis and animal foot print identification (Taberlet et al., 1999). These non-invasive tools help monitoring rare or shy species and guide management strategies aimed at balancing biodiversity conservation with increasing human land-use pressures around the lake.

One of Kenya’s biodiversity hotspots is Mount Kenya Forest. This biodiversity hotspot is also the source to many rivers. These rivers drain to two main rivers systems in Kenya namely the Tana River and Ewaso Nyiro River Systems. The Mount Kenya biodiversity hotspot is home to many flora and fauna species including some Kenyan endemics. With reference to reptiles and amphibians, some of the Kenyan endemic species in this biodiversity hotspot include, the silver bladder reed frog (Hyperolius cystocandicans), Lönnberg’s earless dwarf toad (Mertensophryne lonnbergi), Mt. Kenya bladeless chameleon (Kinyongia excubitor), Mt. Kenya striped Alpine chameleon (Trioceros schubotzi), Mt. Kenya bush viper (Atheris desaixi) and Kenyan montane viper (Montatheris hindii) among others (Malonza & Bwong 2023). This study targeted the rivers that drain into the Ewaso Nyiro river system. These rivers are found in three counties of Meru (Teleswani, Ontulili and Timau), Nyeri (Burguret and Narumoru) and Laikipia (Nanyuki and Likii). A consolidated field reports of the first and second surveys of this project conducted in 2024 was published in Research gate (Musila et al., 2025), but the raw date remains largely unavailable. Kenyan endemics amphibians and reptiles species like Kinangop puddle frog (Phrynobatrachus kinangopensis), Gallmann's sand frog, (Tomopterna gallmanni), Elmenteita rock agama (Agama caudospinosa), and Tigoni reed frog (Hyperolius cystocandicans) were recordes during this study. This dataset contains results of field survey undertaken to: (I) establish the species composition, abundance and distribution of amphibians and reptiles in 7 rivers originating from Mount Kenya and emptying into Ewaso Nyiro River. (II) Assess the amphibians and reptiles’ conservation threats and make recommendations for informed conservation and management measures for the rivers (III) Monitor changes in species composition owing to some interventions by Flora and Fauna Kenya (www.fauna-flora.org) in the areas surrounding the rivers. The field data was collected in 20 days covering a dry season (10 days) 23rd to 30th March 2024 and wet season (10 days) 27th August to 3rd September 2024. The dataset contains 927 records of reptiles and amphibians found in the North Ewaso Nyiro Rivers. The data were formatted according to the Darwin Core Standards by Herpetology Section, National Museums of Kenya before publishing through the IPT at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi.

Although protected areas globally play a key role in biodiversity conservation, species and population continue to decline inside them. Thus, there’s a need to enhance biodiversity investigations in and around immediate environment of protected areas systems in order to keep in pace with the turnover of species. We used 40 Timed Species Counts (TSCs), located in different parts of Hell’s Gate National Park (NP) Kenya, to sample birds both in the dry and wet seasons and also opportunistically in between February 2023-February 2024. Data was collected by two observers with binoculars walking slowly at a constant speed along the dirt roads in the mornings (07:00-11:00am). A total of 1350 records were recorded of 17 Orders, 53 families, 107 genera and 158 different species. Four bird species listed as globally threatened by IUCN Red List of Threatened species were recorded including Rüppell's Vulture (Gyps rueppellii) Critically Endangered (CR), Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum) Endangered (EN), Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus) EN), and Kori Bustard Ardeotis kori (NT). The main threats to bird species and their habitats at Hell’s Gate NP were; Livestock overgrazing, land uses incompatible to wildlife conservation around the park, and geothermal power generation and associated activities. We recommend further detailed investigations on the effects of these habitat threats to avifauna at the Hell’s Gate NP.

Spotted Ground Thrush Survey in Kenyan Coastal Forests, 2003 - Version 1.1

Spotted Ground Thrush Zoothera guttata is a rare, elusive and little-known bird species with a wide but discontinuous distribution. Severe threats in the form of forest loss and fragmentation leading to rapid population decline have led to the species being classified as Endangered (BirdLife International 2000, 2007). Zoothera guttata is known only as a non-breeding visitor between late March and November to forests on the Kenya coast (Bennun 1992). Information regarding the Spotted Ground Thrush in most Kenyan sites has been scanty and scattered, making it difficult to clearly understand its status in Kenya. Bennun (1985, 1987) did the only focused studies on Spotted Ground Thrush in Kenya. In 1983 he did a short study assessing the species’ status and general ecology at Gede Ruins Forest. This was later followed up by a one-week ringing session in 1985. Further ringing was done at Gede Ruins and Arabuko-Sokoke forests in 1992. A long time had passed since these last bird surveys. This necessitated follow-up surveys of the Spotted Ground Thrush forests at the Kenyan coast to assess the current status of the species and its forest habitat.

This dataset contains results of examining the conservation status of Zoothera guttata on its non-breeding grounds in the Kenya coastal forests achieved through re-assessing: (1) its current and probable changes in population, distribution and forest habitat status, and (2) existing conservation measures that benefit the species.

The dataset contains 11 records of Spotted Ground Thrush. The data were formatted according to the Darwin Core Standards by A Rocha Kenya before publishing through the IPT at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi.

Occurrence of Acraea Butterflies in Africa, 1892- 2022 - Version 1.0

The ABRI holdings of Acraea (Nymphalidae) have been catalogued and sum up to 45654 specimens
and are the second most complete holdings in the world after www.acraea.com run by D. Bernaud
(France) which number over 50000 specimens.
ABRI and Bernaud work in close collaboration since 2021 and have published independent Acraea
research papers. In this Data collection, we have followed the Pierre Bernaud arrangement of Acraea
Actinote series of Butterflies of the World: Series Erich Bauer and Thomas Frankenbach part 31. Pierre
Bernaud Nymphalidae XVI. Acraea, subgenus Actinote, 2009 and Nymphalidae XXIII Acraea subgenus
Acraea 2013
The Acraeainae are mainly Afrotropical 240 species and 72 subspecies. 5 species, from Indo Australian
region and the genus Actinote 58 species of Neotropical origin
In 2019 A.P. Carvalho et al wrote a paper entitled is sexual conflict a driver of speciation? A case study
with a tribe of Brush-footed butterflies and they used the genera Acraea and its closely related Asian
family Cethosia. The Baysian diversification rate analysis splits the Neotropical Actinote very neatly
also the ex Bemitestis group is very old and distinct. They is an ongoing work on the generic status of
the group Acraea but until such publication is in press and accepted by the Lepidoptera specialists, we
prefer to retain the Pierre Bernaud arrangement and will retain phylogeny and alter the Acraea
collection accordingly but for now all Acraeainae from Africa are considered as Acraea.
The ABRI holding consist of all Acraea species but of which six of these are known only from the type
specimens and are in the National Museums of London and Oxford in UK and Paris in France.
The Carvalho et al work of 2019 shows the division of 7 Paraphyletic genera six of which are African.
Whilst we await a revision of the tribe Acraeini. We have retained the Pierre and Bernaud
arrangement of 2014. As stated earlier, this is not the Lepidopterists Society of Africa arrangement.
The 8 missing species of Acraea in ABRI collection are; Acraea aureola Eltringham, 1911-Angola, Acraea onerata Trimen, 1891 -Angola/Namibia, Acraea lapidorum Pierre, 1988-S. DRC/Angola, Acraea lofua Eltringham, 1911- S. DRC, Acraea comor Pierre, 1992- G. Comoro, Acraea kinduana Pierre, 1979- E. DRC, Acraea actnotina (Lathy, 1903)-Nigeria, Acraea dimonika Bernaud, 2021-Congo.
This dataset presents a total of 43,385 specimens of Acraea collected from different countries within the African continent.

The Taita Hills form part of the Eastern Arc Mountain, a biodiversity hotspot stretching from Taita Hills Kenya to the Udzungwa Mountains in South-central Tanzania. The mountains have a very diverse flora and fauna with a great deal of endemism, about seven butterfly species are endemic to these forests and their fringes including Cymothoe teita (Teita glider), Charaxes xiphares desmondi (King forest Charaxes) and Papilio desmondi teita (Desmond’s blue-banded swallowtail) Charaxes druceanus teita, Charaxes acuminatus teitensis. Charaxes druceanus williamsi is endemic to Kasigau Forest, and together with the East Africa Coastal forests, have been placed as one of the 25 biodiversity hotspot globally.
The rate of diminishing of the Taita Hills natural vegetation is so alarming due to the extensive agriculture development which has resulted in loss and fragmentation of habitat. About 220 species of butterflies that are projected to occur in Taita Hills are now under threat towards decline of their habitat. This dataset presents 548 records of butterfly specimens from the larger Taita-Taveta county preserved at the African Butterfly Research Institute. A total of 42 species of butterflies were recorded belonging to three families namely Papilionidae (6), Pieridae (12) and Nymphalidae (24).

Kenya coastal forests are the forests of the coastal strip of Kenya in east Africa which are composed of mangrove forests of the salt-water coasts, the forests of the mountain systems and the lowland forest patches (Mutuku P. 2005). These forests lie between Latitude 2°22'S, Longitude 40°28'E Lamu and latitude 4°38'S, Longitude 39°22'E Kwale and are distributed in four counties: Lamu to the North, Kilifi in the middle and Kwale to the south including Mombasa City (Matiku, P. (2005)). These forests are biodiversity hotspot areas with high butterfly abundance that have attracted international interest over the last decades as the realization of its biodiversity importance.
This dataset presents 7,792 records of butterfly specimens preserved at the African Butterfly Research Institute. A total of 263 species of butterflies were recorded belonging to five key butterfly families in Kenya, namely Hesperiidae (38), Papilionidae (14), Pieridae (36), Nymphalidae (108), Lycaenidae (67). Some of the rare butterfly species of the Kenya Coast include Charaxes acuminatus shimbanus endemic to Shimba Hills, Amauris nossima mrima endemic to Mrima Hill and rare Coeliades chalybe, Artitropa reducta that were discovered from Base Titanium and Shimba Hills respectively during Environmental Impact Assessment and have been recorded in this dataset.

The forests of the Taita Hills of south-east Kenya are of great importance to conservation, holding three endemic birds which are listed as critical by Collar et al. (1994) and many other endemic taxa. The forests, which presently cover less than 400 ha, are included in Endemic Bird Area with the Eastern Arc mountains of Tanzania (Stattersfield et al. 1997), with which they have close biogeographical affinities (Lovett 1985). Despite this importance for conservation, few biological studies had been carried out in Taita Hills before 1996 hence the urge of this study. Birds were studied in the remaining forest patches of the Taita Hills from 1996 as part of a wider project to assess the times to extinction of bird species following deforestation.
This dataset gives a baseline information on the ringing events of birds at the Taita Hills forests fragments between 1996 and 2016 with 26,360 individual records.
Bird ringing was performed in 17 forest patches in Taita Hills including: Chawia, Fururu, Kichuchenyi, Macha, Maghimbinyi, Mbololo, Msidunyi, Mwachora, Ndiwenyi,Ngangao,Njovuni,Ronge,Sagala,Sussu,Vulia,Wundanyi and Yale.

The biological importance and uniqueness of East African coastal forests is widely recognized; they form an Endemic Bird Area. Important remnants of this fragmented habitat are on the southern Kenyan coast, but their avifauna has been little studied. In between June and July 2003, a survey of endangered Spotted ground-thrush (Geokichla guttata) was undertaken with an overall objective of examining it conservation status on its non-breeding grounds in the Kenyan Coastal Forest.
Other avifauna of the ten South Coast Forest fragments were assessed including the threats facing them using mist-netting, time species counts and point counts.
This dataset contains 2504 entries of birds recorded using the point count method. Some birds in the IUCN red list recorded in this data set include near threatened East Coast Akalat (Sheppardia gunningi), Fischer’s Turaco (Tauraco fischeri), Southern banded snake-eagle (Circaetus fasciolatus) and Spotted Ground Thrush (Geokichla guttata).
The data were formatted according to the Darwin Core Standards by A Rocha Kenya before publishing through the IPT at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi.

This metadata describes an ornithological sampling event carried out in the Tosso forest, Taraba Sate Nigeria with over 200 known species of birds. The Tosso forest is located in the southern part of Taraba State, North-eastern Nigeria. It is a poorly known lowland forest laying along the border of Nigeria and Cameroon, between the Obudu Plateau to the southwest and the Mabilla Plateau to the northeast, apparently cut off from other lowland forest blocks by these two highland massifs, and the Bamenda highlands in Cameroon to the south. The area is relatively unpopulated, but logging activity and hunting takes place within and around the area. Despite these, there is still considerable amount of forest left in the area. A total of 52 individuals of 16 species were recorded during bird ringing sessions carried out between 05 May, 2019 and 07 May, 2019.

Ornithological observations were made in and around the lowland tropical forest in the Donga River basin in the southern part of Taraba State (Kurmi Local Government), eastern Nigeria (10° 34' E - 10° 55' E and 6° 57'N - 7° 17'N). In the area where most of the field research was done, the forest has suffered considerable disturbance, but some of the more remote parts trekked through and worked in were in better shape. In terms of the proportion of land still covered by forest, Kurmi Local Government can probably compare favourably with any local government in Nigeria outside the major forest blocks in Cross River State.
The observations were made between 1967 and 1999 and a total of 849 observations of 306 species were recorded, with an additional 8 unconfirmed species. Some of the rare sightings were Grey-headed Broadbill (Smithornis sharpii), Red-capped Robin-Chat (Cossypha natalensis), Green-throated Sunbird (Nectarinia rubescens), Johanna's Sunbird (Nectarinia johannae), and Cameroon Indigobird (Vidua camerunensis), some of which were first sightings for Nigeria.

Data collection was carried out by Mark Hopkins, Newton Isaac, Herman Gray, Genesis Limtin, Bulus Jeremiah, Fidelis, Paul Ishaya, Robert Payne, Laura Payne, Phillip Hall, Nehemiah James, John Barker, Glenn Mitchell, S. A. Manu, Malik Abubakar, Modu Kolo, Mohammed Boyi, Harry Hamsom, Naphtali Enwongulu, Tim Palmer.

This metadata describes an ornithological sampling event carried out in the Tosso forest, Taraba State Nigeria with over 200 known species of birds. The Tosso forest is located in the southern part of Taraba State, North-eastern Nigeria. It is a poorly-known lowland forest laying along the border of Nigeria and Cameroon, between the Obudu Plateau to the southwest and the Mabilla Plateau to the northeast, apparently cut off from other lowland forest blocks by these two highland massifs, and the Bamenda highlands in Cameroon to the south. The area is relatively unpopulated but logging activity and hunting takes place within and around the area. Despite these, there is still considerable amount of forest left in the area. A total of 61 occurrences of 48 species were recorded between 04 May, 2019 and 08 May, 2019.

The birding expedition was carried out across forest patches in Tosso, Kurmi Local Government, Taraba State, Nigeria. The area is characterized as lowland forest with an elevation of about 335m and lies between the Obudu plateau to the west, the Mambilla Plateau to the east and the Bamenda highlands in Cameroon to the south. The terrain is hilly and rocky and has derived savanna in areas where forest has been destroyed. Several streams were seen in the forest with most of them dry at the peak of the dry season.
Tosso is close to the Donga Basin which was categorized as an Important Biodiversity Area in 2002 (BirdLife International) with over 200 bird species recorded thus far. This expedition took place from 18 to 21 December 2017. Some species of interest were:
African Black Duck (Anas sparsa), Palm-nut Vulture (Gypohierax angolensis), European Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), Swamp Nightjar (Caprimulgus natalensis), Black Bee-eater (Merops gularis), Lanner Falcon (Falco biarmicus), Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus), Slender-billed Greenbul (Stelgidillas gracilirostris), Buff-throated Apalis (Apalis rufogularis), an undescribed Greenbul, a flock of swallows that looked like Black Saw-wing (Psalidoprocne pristoptera) while not resembling subspecies petiti known from nearby montane areas, and a Yellow Longbill (Macrosphenus flavicans) whose plumage appeared different from that of the expected subspecies.
This dataset contains a total of 64 species.

Occurrence records of mammal species in Taita-Taveta, Kwale and Kilifi counties in Kenya - Version 1.0

Many sighting observations of Kenyan mammal species as well as preserved museums specimens have not been digitized and published online. This dataset comprises of field observations of mammals and museums specimens collected from several studies conducted in three counties in Kenyan coast (Kwale, Kilifi and Taita-Taveta) in several years (2009, 2012, 2016, 2018). Medium and large sized mammals were recorded using direct or indirect methods using transect searches. Bats, were surveyed with mist-nets were set across bat flyways and others directly captured with hand nets as they flew out of active roosts. Rodents and shrews were sampled with Sherman traps and metal snap traps. A total of 77 mammal species were record in the three study counties represented by 11 mammal orders; Carnivora (Carnivores) 7 spp.); Cetartiodactyla (Even-toed and whales and dolphins (10 spp.); Chiroptera (Bats) 35 spp.); Erinaceomorpha (Hedgehogs) 1 spp.); Hyracoidea (Hyraxes) 1 spp.); Lagomorpha (Hares) 1 spp.); Macroscelidea (Elephant shrews) 3 spp.); Primates (Wild primates and man) 7 spp.); Proboscidae (African elephants) 1 spp.); Rodentia (Rodents) 10 spp.) and Soricomorpha (White-toothed shrews (1 spp.). Further detailed mammal ecological research is needed in the Kenyan coastal forests. This is because all these forests are highly disturbed by increasing human activities around them such as extraction of building materials and firewood, as well as encroachment for human settlements and crop cultivation.

Kenyan coastal region is located in the southeast part of Kenya. Coastal forests are mainly distributed in four counties in the coastal region of Kenya, lying within the latitude of 1°40' to about 4°40' south. They are part of the larger coastal forests of East Africa which cover an area of approximately 3170 km2 of which, Kenyan coastal forests cover about 787 km2. They contain various forest patches with Arabuko Sokoke, and Shimba hills National Reserves forests being the largest remaining forests patches (Burgess et al. 1998, 2003; Younge et al. 2002; Matiku et al. 2013).
Arabuko Sokoke (3.3278° S, 39.8749° E) and Shimba Hills National Reserve Forests (4°09′–4°21′ S) were surveyed for their biodiversity including flora and fauna between 1992 and 1993 under The Kenya Indigenous Forest Conservation Project (KIFCON) with an overall mission of promoting and supporting the conservation of biodiversity, maintenance of ecological services and sustained productivity of the indigenous closed-canopy forests in Kenya. Birds, mammals, invertebrates, trees and shrubs were surveyed.
Different methods were used to survey birds including mist netting, point count and time species counts.
This dataset gives a baseline information on the bird ringing events at the Arabuko Sokoke forest in 1993 covering 5 ringing sites including: Gede Ruins, Gede Sokoke, Kararacha, Awambwani, Mida sites and Shimba Hills National Reserve Forest in 1992.
The dataset contains 1004 entries. The data were formatted according to the Darwin Core Standards by A Rocha Kenya before publishing through the IPT at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi.

The datasets comprise of small and medium sized mammal species recorded in Kaya Kauma Forest and its immediate surroundings (farmlands) in between November 2018, and November 2020. Small mammals (bats, rodents and shrews) were captured with snap traps and mist-nets identified and released back to the wild. Medium sized mammals were recorded in/directly by search for signs and individuals of mammals along selected transects in and around the Kaya Forest. A total of 16 mammal species of five mammal orders were recorded including Macroscelidea (Elephant shrews) 1spp), Primates (4spp), Rodentia (Rodents) 3spp), Chiroptera (Bats) 6 spp), Cetartiodactyla (Even toed-ungulates (1spp) and Soricomorpha (White-toothed shrews (1spp). All mammal species were not threatened. One of the primate species; Pousargues’s Monkey Cercopithecus mitis albotorquatus monkey is near endemic to the north coast of Kenya. Although the size of the Kaya Kauma is still small, over the years with limited protection, it has still retained trees canopy and bushes which can sustain the survival of this primate species.

The birding trip was to forest patches close to two villages, Mbakunu and Shikpeche of Kwande and Obanliku Local Government Areas in Benue and Cross River States respectively. No previous bird watching had been carried out in these forests. Our study of the geography of the place tells us that the portion of the Guinea forest which lies to the north of the largely montane upland extending from the Sankwala Mountains in Cross River State via the Obudu Plateau and the Bamenda Highlands in Cameroon to the Mambila Plateau in Taraba State is isolated from the main body of that forest to the south. The forests visited on the trip lie at the western edge of the separated forest region.
The birding trip was undertaken from the 29th of December 2019 – 4th January 2020. On this trip, forest birds were observed with Chestnut-winged Starling Onichognathus fulgidus which is well known from the main forest belt in Nigeria seen for the first time in these forests. A black paradise flycatcher which was similar to the enigmatic bird described by Dr Yakhat Barshep in the ABC Bulletin of 2020 was also seen.
On this trip it was discovered that the forest still remaining in the area is fragmentary and under severe threat with exceptional ornithological importance with high probability of discovering new species and subspecies.
This dataset contains 172 bird species recorded in these forest patches.
