The Avian Collection of the Tana River Basin at the National Museums of Kenya's Ornithology Section.

Latest version published by National Museums of Kenya on Jul 31, 2019 National Museums of Kenya

Occurrence data from natural history collections are critical to understanding biodiversity change over time. The ornithology collection at National Museums of Kenya, holds over 30,000 specimens each carrying important information such as their occurrence across space and time. We mined data (species name, locality, collection date etc.) from these specimens collected from the Tana River Basin. Here, we present a geo-referenced dataset of avian species collected from 1911 to 2004.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 224 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Downloads

Download the latest version of this resource data as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A) or the resource metadata as EML or RTF:

Data as a DwC-A file download 224 records in English (11 KB) - Update frequency: unknown

Project Data

The project aims to elevate the importance of biodiversity data in the decision-making of key partners engaged in the Tana River Basin management. Through the mobilization of existing data, collection of supplemental field data and its publication to make it accessible through an interactive web platform

Title Developing a Freshwater Biodiversity Information System for the Tana River Basin, Kenya, for Improved Ecosystem Management and Development Planning
Identifier 60704 JRS-NMK
Funding JRS Biodiversity Foundation
Study Area Description The specimens are from the ornithology collection, National Museums of Kenya collected along the river Tana basin from the source to the delta just before the sea. The study area includes the counties of Nyeri, Muranga, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Kitui, Garissa, Tana River and Lamu.
Design Description Data from the specimen labels was mined and keyed-in into excel spreadsheets. The data was then aligned to the Darwin Core guidelines following cleaning and validation. For geo-referencing, GEOLocate was used to translate the textual locality descriptions into geographical coordinates.
