A checklist of invertebrates of Ewaso Narok swamp in the semi-arid Laikipia County, Kenya
Latest version published by National Museums of Kenya on Oct 18, 2017
A first checklist of invertebrates of Ewaso narok swamp in the semi-arid, Laikipia County, Kenya. They were sampled using pitfall trapping and sweep netting. The swamp is highly impacted by land use transformation to agricultural activities as opposed to the traditional pastoral use. The invertebrates were identified to species level where possible, other distinct species were treated as morphospecies. The checklist has species and morphospecies from across 19 Orders and forms a baseline for future monitoring.
Data Records
The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 411 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Study Area Description | The sampling was done in Ewaso narok swamp, located near Rumuruti town (0°17’ N 36°34’E, 1,840 m a.s.l.), West Laikipia district, in the semi-arid Laikipia County. The sampling was done in the wet and dry season. |
Design Description | The invertebrates were sampled using pitfall trapping and sweep netting. Relevant invertebrates’ identification keys and reference specimens in the zoological collection of National Museums of Kenya were used in the species identification. Species and morphospecies data captured in excel spreadsheets. Data aligned to the Darwin core standards before publishing on Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) through the Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT) at National Museums of Kenya. |
