Species checklist of fresh/brackishwater prawns genus Macrobrachium in Kenya available at the National Museums of Kenya's Natural History Collections, Invertebrates Zoology Section
最新版本 由 National Museums of Kenya 發佈於 Nov 13, 2020
Kenya is rich in aquatic biodiversity including the freshwater prawns genus Macrobrachium (Palaeomonidae: Decapoda) which are important in fisheries as human food sources. However, except for a few specimens of previously unindentified Macrobrachium species, there was no national reference collection of Macrobrachium species housed in the scientific collection of National Museums of Kenya despite specimens of similar species deposited in other International Museums. This greatly hampered local research and utilization patterns including potential aquaculture of Macrobrachium species that are known to be taxonomically difficult group. To establish the current status of Macrobrachium species in Kenya, an ecological study was carried out along rivers Tana and Athi in Kenya between the year 2015 and 2018. Occurrence of four species namely; Macrobrachium rude, M. equidens, M. lepidactylus and M. dolichodactylus in Kenya was confirmed using both morphological and genetic analysis to establish correct identification of the species. The morphological analysis was carried out in Kenya at National Museums of Kenya while genetic analysis was carried out at Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University of Frankfurt/Main in Germany. This datasubset presents the checklist of four species that were recorded. The specimens are deposited in the Invertebrate scientific collection of the National Museums of Kenya (NMK), Nairobi.
Data Records
The data in this 出現紀錄 resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 10 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

計畫資料
The project aims to improve our knowledge of the diversity and status of freshwater prawns genus Macrobrachium in Kenya that play a role in food security. This occurrence datasubset was built from field surveys conducted between 2015 to 2018 along rivers Tana and Athi in Kenya .

研究區域描述 | Wet preserved collection at NMK. The study was carried along rivers Tana (from Mt. Kenya 3600m) and Athi (Aberdares range from 2400m) in Kenya to the coast and also some areas along the Kenya coast. Both rivers drain into Indian Ocean where interaction of fresh and seawater occurs that is known to influence the breeding behavior of prawns. |
研究設計描述 | Prawns were sampled mainly using beach seine nets and traps but also electrofishers in the upstream stream sites. They were later preserved in ethanol after correct identification. |
