Nectar-feeding Lepidoptera of Mabira Central Forest Reserve, Uganda

Latest version published by Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences on Nov 19, 2019 Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences

Occurrence records of three families of nectar feeding Lepidoptera (Hesperiidae, Papilionidae, Sphingidae) sampled from Mabira central forest reserve between 2018 and 2019 by the Lepidoptera Pollinator Diversity Project in Uganda,. Whole preserved specimens are housed in the Zoology museum, Makerere University, Uganda.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,934 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

Mabira Central Forest Reserve is a medium altitude moist semi-deciduous forest with a vegetation type that is unique within Uganda’s protected areas system. This fact and the immense ecological, socio-economic and cultural values attributed to the forest have attracted intense research activity in the forest. There is considerable knowledge about the diversity of the vertebrate fauna and flora of Mabira forest but much less is known about the invertebrate diversity. This survey undertook to generate knowledge of the nectar-feeding Lepidoptera in the forest and surrounding farmlands, because of their ecological role as pollinators; farming is a common activity within the forest enclaves and the surrounding areas. The survey was conducted between February 2018 and May 2019 and, focused on three families: Papilionidae, Hesperiidae and Sphingidae. This dataset presents the 123 species that were recorded; specimens have been added to the insect collection of the Zoology Museum at Makerere University, Uganda.

Title Assessment of Lepidoptera pollinator species diversity data in East Africa
Funding JRS Biodiversity Foundation
Study Area Description Medium altitude (1070 – 1340masl) moist semi-deciduous forest that spans about 306km2 and is located 54 km from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. The forest has a mosaic of land-use types, including farmland
Design Description Butterflies were sampled using sweep-nets and observations of species in flight and on vegetation; light traps were used to sample moth specimens on warm dark moonless nights. Specimens were sampled from three land-use types: forest, forest edge and farmland.
