The data presented here is part of the ringing data at the National Museums of Kenya, Ornithology Section archives for the years between 1971 – 1996. It contains a list of species caught and ringed in the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest by different ringers within this period. National Museum of Kenya , Ornithology Section is responsible for all ringing activities in East Africa. They are custodians of all the rings used by ringers within this part of Africa. The ringers are usually adviced to leave copies of their ringing records in the section for future references. The list consists of species recorded in the different habitats of the forest as well as those recorded in the areas with close proximity to Arabuko Sokoke Forest.

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. Project Data
The purpose of this project is to digitalise all data of both flora and fauna recorded in Arabuko-Sokoke Forest making the data easily accessible to conservationists and researchers. By being the largest and least disturbed coastal forest in East Africa, the forest is home to a number of endemic and rare bird species. Ringing of birds in especially in forested habitats is one of the best methods of collecting data on cryptic species of birds found in the forest ecosystems.

| Study Area Description | Arabuko-Sokoke Forest lies within co-ordinates 030 20’ S and 390 50’E. The forest is made up of three distinc habitat types namely. Cynometra Forest, Brachystegia Woodland and Mixed Forest. Cyanometra forest is dominated by Cynometra webberi and Manilkara sulcata tree species. The brachystegia woodland is dominated by Brachystegia spiciformis while in the moxed forest the common tree species are Afzelia quanzensis (formerly dominant), Hymenaea verrucosa, Combretum schumannii and Manilkara sansibarensis and the cycad Encephalartos hildebrandtii. These distinct habitats vary depending on the soil type and rainfall patterns. A number of seasonal wetlands are found in the forest including the Arabuko Swamp. |
| Design Description | The main data collection method was mist netting. Different ringers collected ringing data in Arabuko Sokoke Forest at different times in the years between 1971 and 1996. They all stored copies of their records in the National Museums of Kenya, Ornithology Section. The list consist of species recorded within the boundaries of the forest and the adjucent environs. The species were approved before being added to this list. The data was then aligned to the Darwin Core Standards before publishing through the IPT at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi. |
