Point Count Data of Birds of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest (2009 - 2010)

Latest version published by National Museums of Kenya on Mar 19, 2019 National Museums of Kenya

Examining bird density, population and diversity in relation to land use change and socioeconomic indicators in Arabuko Sokoke Forest- Kenya. Point count methodology was used to collect avian data between the year 2009 and 2010. This data was used to test the level of impact of fencing might have on the lives of wildlife. Birds have been used widely as litmus paper of environmental stress. This is because birds are very sensitive to the habitat they live in due to the fact that some species are very forest specialist. The point count data was collect by senior research scientist Peter Njoroge from National Museums of Kenya, Ornithology section of zoology department. National Museums of Kenya, ornithology section is recognized institution nationally and internationally to underatake avian research and share their finding with the general public. The data was used to used to test the ecological impact of electric fence in Arabuko Sokoke Forest in Kenya, a biodiversity hotspot.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 120 records. 1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

  • Event (core)
    120
  • Occurrence
    1208

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

The final formatting and digitisation of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest data was funded by the European Union through the Biodiversity Information for Development project of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility https://bid.gbif.org/en/calls/africa-2017/national-grants/

Title Application of biodiversity monitoring data to resolve competing conservation management priorities in an East African forest landscape
Identifier BID-AF2017-0274-NAC
Study Area Description Arabuko-Sokoke Forest lies within co-ordinates 030 20’ S and 390 50’E. The forest is made up of three distinc habitat types namely. Cynometra Forest, Brachystegia Woodland and Mixed Forest. Cyanometra forest is dominated by Cynometra webberi and Manilkara sulcata tree species. The brachystegia woodland is dominated by Brachystegia spiciformis while in the mixed forest the common tree species are Afzelia quanzensis (formerly dominant), Hymenaea verrucosa, Combretum schumannii and Manilkara sansibarensis and the cycad Encephalartos hildebrandtii. These distinct habitats vary depending on the soil type and rainfall patterns. A number of seasonal wetlands are found in the forest includind the Arabuko Swamp.
Design Description The ecological field methodology used to capture data was point count method. It was collected by one individual during the period of between 2009 and 2010 in different segment of the forest structure in Arabuko Sokoke Forest. This data collected was then stored at National Museums of Kenya, Ornithology Section. The list consist of species recored within the boundaries of the forest and the adjascent environs. The data was mostly covered brachystegia forest part and mixed forest part. The species were approved before being added to this list. The data was then aligned to the Darwin Core Standards before publishing through the IPT at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi.
