2018-11-29 eng This dataset provides information for all specimen records of small carnivores housed in both the Mammalogy and Osteology sections of the Mammal Collection at the National Museums of Kenya. A small carnivore in this instance is designated as any member of the mammalian Order Carnivora with adult males and females weighing on average less than 15 kg. For Kenya, this includes 31 species of carnivores. These data were generated in collaboration with students from Karatina University through workshops sponsored through Mpala Research Centre and using funds provided through the European Union and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility Biodiversity in Development grant program. 1) Photograph all specimens in NMK 2) Digitize specimen data from tags/existing database 3) Georeference localities 4) Plot localities to identify potential errors 5) Develop ecological niche models based on NMK and other available records 6) Use distribution maps to develop conservation priorities 7) Incorporate records, maps, and literature into a national conservation strategy These data were all obtained from the National Museums of Kenya Mammal Collection and represent a haphazard sampling scheme over the last 100 years by various collectors. Countries represented in this collection include Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Haphazard and targeted sampling of mammals over the last 100 years by various collectors All specimen records were photographed by NMK staff to facilitate confirmation of identifications and associated specimen data. Project partners work together under the newly created Small Carnivore Conservation Task Force to collate, digitize and publish existing records from museum vouchers, literature and observations. Based on available data, the project maps the distribution of each of the species and assist policy makers to prioritize conservation schemes.
